A brief description of this unique method of exercise
Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in 1920, was originally designed to help injured servicemen and consisted of various exercises performed on hospital beds. It's development through the years has meant it's appeal is now far reaching to all populations regardless of age, level of fitness and mobility. Pilates is now integrated into nearly all top level sports as it's benefits are huge.
Some of the benefits to be gained from doing Pilates are:
* strengthens back and abdominal muscles * improves breathing and circulation * alleviates every day aches and pains particularly associated with neck, shoulders and back pain * Creates long, lean and defined muscles * improves posture, mobility and flexibility * relieves stress and tension * enhances body awareness and focus * aids recovery after injury and reduces the risk of reoccurrence.
The Pilates method is based on 6 fundamental principles:
* centreing * breathing * precision * control * concentration * flow.
Joseph used these as a basis to the original 34 moves in the matwork repertoire. As lifestyles are now very different, we drive more, sit more, and drop our heads through use of tablets and phones; the exercises have been researched, adapted and modified to reflect the resulting postural issues and joint complications.
